Apparently, the most auspicious weeks of the year are upon us, what with there being no wedding dates available between mid-July and November. While that gives our Winter brides enough time for shopping, relaxing and planning, there are still some of us who are running around getting outfits in place for the last few weddings of this season. Hence, this life-saving shopping list that I prepared for all my Chennai shopaholics.
While we all have our usual shopping haunts in the city, what really gives us a chance to amp up our wardrobes without flying to the north are the exhibitions and pop-ups happening all over the city. Especially over the last two years, there are many who have established a name for creating unique and fun shopping experiences. I for one, am always excited when my favourite brands come to the city, even if they’re available online. It’s always different try+buy without the whole hassle of returns, isn’t it?
So thank me later, and start marking your trousseau shopping calendar right away.
THE KAMAALGAADI TRUNK SHOW
When : 1 -2 July, 2016
Where: Maalgaadi, Besant Nagar
What to expect: A bunch of emerging designers and brands who are realllllyyyy HOT right now. I can close my eyes, think of my favourite new brand and be assured that Shahin, the co-founder, has got a home for it at Maalgaadi. Which is why it came as no surprise that she decided to bring down 1/3rd of the brands that showcased at Lakme Fashion Week S/R 2016. If you’re an edgy bride going trousseau shopping, Siddhartha Bansal, and I Am Design need to be top of your list.
THE ARMOIRE POP UP : CREO EDITION
When : 2 July, 2016
Where: Rutland Gate Studio, Nungambakkam
What to expect: Less than a year old, but going from strength to strength, Nandini’s Armoire Pop-Ups have a reputation for carrying affordable luxury pieces, almost always leaning towards the indo-western side of things. This time is no different, as Armoire joins hands with Mumbai-based multi brand store Creo. Founded by Ami Javeri, Creo curates a variety of styles from across the globe and showcases handpicked emerging designers to create an eclectic assortment of clothing and accessories. A bride-to-be herself, Nandini’s top trousseau picks are Ritika Sachdeva for jewellery, DuetLuxury for embellished clutches and Stephany D’Souza for flowy, honeymoon-appropriate maxis. Better still, there’s an Instagram giveaway on right now. Go go go!
When : 15 – 16 July, 2016
Where: Hyatt Regency, Anna Salai
What to expect: Not much is known about who is showcasing but with over 150 exhibitors, this promises to be one to remember.
TANA BANA : A COLLECTION OF BANARASI WEAVES
When : 16 July, 2016
Where: Rutland Gate Studio, Nungambakkam
What to expect: This one, I’m reaallllyyy excited about. No matter what I say about trends and cool styles, I will always have a special place in my heart for all the traditional and heirloom pieces that our country has to offer. Banarasi sarees are one of those pieces that every bride should have in her trousseau and make sure her daughter too has one many many years later because that’s how timeless they are. Think of this exhibition as a national travelling trunk of banarasi weaves sourced directly from the weavers. Fashion with heart – it doesn’t get better than that does it?
FUNKY FISH POP-UP
When : 23 July, 2016
Where: To be announced
What to expect: Yes, the dates are out, and you heard it here FIRST! In true Funky Fish style, the girls behind the initiative are driving us crazy with the suspense, but the bar is set high and I’m sure they won’t disappoint. Follow them as they reveal designer details over the next two weeks.
